MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA)
MMA is a full-contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground. Competitors take the best elements from multiple disciplines such as boxing, Thai Boxing, Wrestling, Karate and Jiu-Jitsu to win either on points or by submission or knock out.
Since the birth of martial arts, practitioners have always tried to prove that their style is superior to that of their opponents, however the term MMA was first used at UFC1 in 1993. 25 years on from this MMA has exploded in popularity and what was once a niche underground sport now rivals boxing and wrestling for pay per view numbers.
The American owned Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is still considered the number one promotion but the UK has its own thriving scene and events, producing world class athletes.
